This Edible Ooho Water Bubble may Replace Water Bottles
Humans have produced enough plastic since the second world war and there’s no person on this planet who has never used plastic since then. As the world population continued to grow the amount of plastic produce also grew substantially. From water bottles to vehicles we use in our everyday life, everything has a bit of plastic in it which made our life both easier and safer. But this synthetic material has also left harmful imprints on the environment as well as on human health.
In 2012, it was estimated that there was approximately 165 million tons of plastic pollution in the world's oceans. On average the world consumes about 50 billion water bottles every year. That means the world consumes 1600 water bottles per second. These bottles often go as imperishable waste into the biosphere. Most of the plastic wastes are dumped into the oceans which in turn affects life of the marine animals.
Plastic bottles contain a hazardous chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA), which is used to make the plastic hard and transparent. BPA enters the human body through exposure to plastics such as bottled drinks and cleaning products. It has been found in significant amounts in at-risk groups such as pregnant women’s placentas and growing foetuses. The chemical is known to induce a host of health problems including certain types of cancer, neurological difficulties, early puberty in girls, infertility in both men and women, and it also affects the growth new born babies. Just imagine the damage that the water bottles do to the environment.
Current alternatives to plastic water bottles include reusable water bottles and boxed water sold in a milk-carton-like container. Keeping these things in mind, three British industrial design students from UK sustainable-packaging start up Skipping Rocks Lab have developed Ooho. Ooho is a colourless, tasteless, squishy water bubble made from seaweed and is edible and biodegradable.

The Ooho is a ball of water surrounded by a biodegradable, edible membrane made of seaweed extract. One must tear it open and pour it in their mouth or simply eat the whole thing. Skipping Rocks Lab first made headlines with the prototype back in 2014 and went on to sell it at pop-ups. Now the company is on track to take the Ooho to a much bigger scale, as it successfully crowdfunded the project with $500,000, which it sought on Crowdcube. Already at $750,000, the money raised will enable Skipping Rocks to make its product more widely available with a commercial lease, development of a retail machine, and booking more than 18 events in 2018.

The Skipping Rocks company was founded by a group of engineers from the Imperial College, London. Skipping rocks has the ambitious goal of replacing the water bottles with Ooho. Skipping Rocks Lab says its unusual packaging costs less than plastic and can be used for other beverages besides water, including soft drinks and liquor. The start-up is already creating the Ooho balls in different shapes. But their only drawback is that these balls must remain small enough to be consumed in one go. It will be very interesting to see when Ooho takes off and replaces the current plastic water bottles as an exchange for something which is more healthy and eco-friendly soon.
